27 August 2008

Romance is a victim of the credit crunch, it has been revealed.

Research conducted by the Co-operative Bank shows that shoppers are cutting down on the amount of luxury items they buy in their weekly dash up and down the supermarket aisles as a result of the credit crunch, rising inflation and fears of a recession.

One of the main casualties is flowers - suggesting it is possible to put a price on love
.

"People are being more conservative in their spending and are finding that cutting back on luxury items can help make a difference," commented Emma Thomas, current account product manager at the Co-operative Bank.

The average amount spent during a visit to a supermarket now stands at £68.33, down from the £89.88 spent last year.

Further evidence of romance being put on the back burner includes the fact that nail polish, fake tan lotion, teeth whitening toothpaste and wine are also being left on the shelves.

Other items to have disappeared from people's shopping lists include quilted toilet paper, branded food and CDs.
