20 August 2008

One in three British women would rather follow fashion than buy food, according to new research.

A study by website mycelebrityfashion.co.uk revealed that 32 per cent of people would skip meals in order to afford the latest designer trends.

As the credit crunch takes its toll, the UK is seeing a worrying rise in the number of 'fashiorexics' – those who starve to be able to afford new clothes
.

The study showed that many British women are spending more on shopping for clothes, shoes and accessories each month than they are on shoes.

Around 18 per cent of people said they spend half their monthly wage on clothes, with many doing so to try and impress in the dating game.

Commenting on the report, Jill Tovey of the website, said: "Fashion is clearly still a thriving industry, despite the economy. More people are searching for the best deals and bargains online rather than traipse the high streets, and clearly enjoying themselves whilst doing it!

"With regards to 'fashiorexia', I and MyCelebrityFashion would never advocate eating unhealthily for the sake of fashion, and believe in balance."ADNFCR-1016-ID-18740313-ADNFCR
