Break-ups ruin romantic holidays
27 October 2008
Relationship break-ups are the number one reason for cancelling holidays, according to a new survey.
|
A study of more than 2,000 holidaymakers conducted by an online independent travel agent revealed that 12 per cent of couples who book a romantic getaway do not actually end up going on them.
Sometimes couples book a holiday when they feel their relationship is in need of salvation, but the research shows that it is often too little too late.
Figures show that around £96 million is wasted on non-refundable deposits in the UK every year.
Other reasons for cancelling holidays include family bereavement, illness and the death of a pet.
Over a third of people that split up with their other half before a holiday change the name on the booking form to include a friend.
Chris Clarkson, marketing director of sunshine.co.uk, which carried out the survey, said: "We were looking at ways we could improve our customer service by trying to understand the reasons behind cancellations, and were shocked to see that a large number of people have to cancel their holiday due to breaking up with their partner.
"Going on holiday with a partner is a big step for many couples; but one that unfortunately for many never transpires."
