7 January 2008

A couple who found romance through their charity work have been awarded for their services.

Barbara and Les Taylor have been volunteering with St John Ambulance for 27 and 29 years respectively.

The couple met in their early volunteering days and eventually romance blossomed, leading to their marriage five years ago, reports the Ingleby Barwick & Thornaby Gazette.

They have just been named members of the Order of St John at a special ceremony at the Grand Priory Church in London.

"We have known each other since we were both about 17, and used to meet on operations and on camps," said Barbara, a professional nurse.

The couple were presented with the award by the Prior of the Priory of England and the Islands, Sir Brian Jenkins.

Sir Brian said: "Mr and Mrs Taylor have made an outstanding contribution to St John Ambulance and to volunteering in North Yorkshire and Teesside."

The ceremony was approved by Her Majesty the Queen, who is sovereign head of the Order.
