... Credit crunch 'spurs on online dating' Credit crunch 'spurs on online dating'

9 June 2008

The credit crunch has led to a surprising surge in the number of people dating online, according to an expert.

With singletons in the UK going to be the most hit by the credit crunch, it seems that those looking for love are looking for more affordable ways to find that Mr or Miss Right.

Websites have reported an unprecedented rise in the number of people joining up since Brits have become increasingly cash-strapped.

Steve Moylan, the owner and manager of one website, said: "We have not undertaken any unusual marketing activity during the period, nothing that we were not doing in the months before this sudden increase in interest in our site."

He said people are increasingly looking for ways to meet new people that does not involve getting plastered in expensive bars in town.

He said: "If you think about, the credit crunch is going to be having the greatest effect on single people who live alone or with children, making them think harder about how they socialise and spend their ever more limited fun money."

Mr Moylan added that people can search for people living close to them and make the connection without spending any money at all.
