		| | ... | Flurry of proposals this leap year

 5 February 2008

Eight per cent of all singles are planning to pop the question this year, according to new research.

And the average cost of a proposal is £1,218, the study by online bank cahoot revealed.

However, the typical engagement ring is a less pricey £347, with romantic types shelling far more out on a special location and ensuring the experience is memorable, in a good way, for their lover.

The survey also found that 703,000 women are planning to take advantage of the leap year and ask the all-important question on February 29th.

Matthew Timms, director of cahoot, warned that proposals could be expensive.

"Of course we can't guarantee that everyone will say yes, but a bit of careful financial planning should ensure that the proposal runs as smoothly as possible."

Wales and the south-west of England are the most maritally-inclined regions, with 13 per cent of their single populations hatching a proposal.
