... Heartbreak more acute for some ethnic backgrounds Heartbreak more acute for some ethnic backgrounds

19 October 2007

Americans of European origin are less likely to cope with negative events such as heartbreak compared to their counterparts from Asian backgrounds.

The research by the University of Virginia also showed that those with European backgrounds recover from back events at a slower rate, but are more likely to be made happy by positive events in their lives such as falling in love.

Some 350 people from different ethnic backgrounds were asked to record their satisfaction with life on a daily basis, along with the number of positive and negative events that had occurred in their day.

Shigehiro Oishi, a psychology professor involved in the research, said: "We found that the more positive events a person has, the more they feel the effects of a negative event.

"People seem to dwell on the negative thing when they have a large number of good events in their life."

He continued: "In general, it's good to have a positive perspective. But unless you can switch your mindset to accept negative facts of everyday life, it becomes very hard to maintain a comfortable level of satisfaction.
