Male monkeys 'pay' females for sex

Male monkeys pay their female mates for sex, a new study has revealed.

But before you start imagining jungle brothels and pimps hanging from trees, it is worth mentioning that the payment is in the genteel form of grooming rather than hard cash.
A study of macaques by Michael Gumert of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore found that female monkeys were more than twice as likely to get frisky if a male tended to their fur beforehand.
On average, females had sex 1.5 times per hour, increasing to 3.5 times per hour after the female had been groomed by a male.
Luckily for the attentive chaps in question, she was most likely to reward them, rather than nearby male, for their efforts.
Ronald Noe of France's University of Strasbourg told the AFP: "There is a very well-known mix of economic and mating markets in the human species itself.
"There are many examples of rich old men getting young attractive ladies."
