... Men footing the bill in credit crunch dating Men footing the bill in credit crunch dating

25 July 2008

The credit crunch is taking its toll in British singletons' search for love, according to new research.

A study shows that in the past year, UK love-seekers have spent 12 per cent on dating and finding The One.

The Cost of Love Index by Parship showed that this year, lonely hearts will spend £11.5 billion on their collective love "shopping bill".

This is down from £13.1 billion in 2007 and shows that as fuel prices, utility bills and food prices rise, Britons are shunning their pursuit of love and happiness.

One interesting finding is that now more women are resorting to traditional dating rules when they do actually meet a guy.

Because they are so hard up, many women are abandoning their Power Woman independence and expecting a man to fork out for a date.

Commenting on the survey, which questioned more than 1,000 singletons, Dr Victoria Lukats, a dating expert, said it was not surprising that both men and women still prefer the guy to pick up the tab.

She said: "Some may feel this is old-fashioned but it's far from outdated: previous surveys have repeatedly shown that men rate good looks in a partner more highly than women do, while women rate generosity and income of a partner more highly than men do. While these distinct differences exist, it seems that we're a long way off from women being just as likely to pick up the bill on a first date.

"Many men still feel a need to demonstrate their generous side on a first date and figures show that many women are still impressed by this."
