... Men 'lose brain power' by sharing beds Men 'lose brain power' by sharing beds

16 September 2008

While it may feel nice to be snuggled up to someone at night, new research reveals that sharing a bed results in men losing brain power temporarily.

According to a scientific study, when men share a bed with a partner – regardless of whether they make love or not – their brain power is impaired.

This is because their sleep is disrupted when they share a bed and their stress levels are increased.

Women, however, are immune to the disruptiveness of sharing a bed because they sleep more deeply than their other halves.

The study by a team at the University of Vienna involved researching the sleep patterns of eight unmarried couples in their 20s who did not have children.

The pairs had to spend ten nights in the same bed and ten nights apart and then had to carry out cognitive tests the following day.

Dr Neil Stanley, a sleep expert at the University of Surrey, said: "It's not surprising that people are disturbed by sleeping together.

"Historically, we have never been meant to sleep in the same bed as each other. It is a bizarre thing to do.

"Sleep is the most selfish thing you can do and it's vital for good physical and mental health.

"Sharing the bed space with someone who is making noises and who you have to fight with for the duvet is not sensible."

He urged couples who are finding their sleep is disrupted not to be ashamed of sleeping in separate beds.
