... Men more supportive towards new mum partners Men more supportive towards new mum partners

8 December 2008

It used to be taboo among couples, but men have now changed their attitude towards their partner breastfeeding in public, according to a new survey.

Research commissioned by skincare brand Kamillosan reveals that men's attitudes towards breastfeeding have significantly changed over the past 15 years.

Around 72 per cent of mothers said their other half is happy for them to breastfeed at home and in public.

But a similar survey conducted by the Royal College of Midwives in 1993 revealed that half of all men thought women should not breastfeed outside the home.

Fifteen years ago, 14 per cent of men thought it was embarrassing, compared to just three per cent today.

Lucy Symons, a spokeswoman for Kamillosan, said those women who have the support of their husbands or partners are likely to breastfeed longer and give their children "the best possible start in life".

She added: "Breastfeeding isn't easy, so mums need all the physical and emotional support they can get especially in the early days.

"If a partner is embarrassed about them breastfeeding in public or in front of his family or friends then it can really knock mum’s confidence and she is much more likely to continue and opt for bottle feeding instead."
