... Men propose to girlfriends 'at three-year mark' Men propose to girlfriends 'at three-year mark'

18 February 2008

Women can expect their boyfriends to pop the question around the time their relationship reaches the three-year mark, but an expert has said the guys should surprise the woman in their life by proposing earlier.

A poll of 3,000 couples carried out by the National Wedding Show found that couples get engaged on average two years, 11 months and eight days after they start their relationship.

Alexandra Campos of the National Wedding Show said: "Men everywhere should be getting ready to buy that ring and get down on one knee if they are anywhere near the three-year anniversary.

"If you really want to earn some brownie points, you could pop the question a few months earlier."

This is a good tip for the guys, with the study also revealing that women are ready for the big question two years, seven months and 24 days after they start going out with someone.

Picking the right time to pop the question is more important than some might realise. A significant number of Britons have set a deadline for a proposal date, with 75 per cent choosing to break up with their other half if that deadline is not met.

Ms Campos said: "2008 is a leap year and a long-held tradition dating back to the fifth century means ladies can take matters into their own hands and pop the question to their boyfriend this year.

"It would seem that not hanging around to be asked is becoming increasingly fashionable as queen of cool Sienna Miller asked Rhys Ifans to make an honest woman of her earlier in the year - and she has always been a style leader."
