Older men want younger models
11 December 2008
Older men really do want younger women when looking for love, according to new research.
|
A study analysing 400 lonely hearts adverts analysed how men and women choose partners.
It found that men put more emphasis on physical attractiveness, while women are more likely to look at social status and resources.
The study was carried out at Gothenburg University and Oxford University revealed a lot of stereotypes about what men and women go far are actually backed up by science.
It found that of the 97 men who mentioned age in their adverts, just three wanted an older woman.
Younger women prefer older men, while women aged 60 and above were more likely to want a younger model.
Jorgen Johnsson at the Department of Zoology at the University of Gothenburg said: "When it comes to physical characteristics, it turned out that men and women were the same."
He said both mentioned words including 'athletic', 'beautiful', 'pretty', 'tall' or 'handsome' in their adverts.
He added: "This might indicate that men have learned to respond to women’s interest in looks, therefore stressing to the same extent their attractiveness in the ads. The fact that both sexes focus on looks may also be influenced by our times, with the great fixation on appearance in the media."
