... Seven year itch cut in half Seven year itch cut in half

18 September 2007

Marriages are not lasting as long as they once did and the infamous seven-year itch is now closer to just three years.

A recent study by the University of California assessed how married couples felt a set number of years into their relationship and how they envisaged what life would be like if they were single again.

While no clear turning point was determined in the lead up to the beginning of the end, the scientists found that happiness decreased during the term of the relationship.

Kelly Musick, one of the authors of the study, said: "The earlier ones are happier. The initial boost that marriage seems to provide fades over time."

Denise Knowles, a relationship council, told the Telegraph: "Over the past 20 years we have seen a huge change because people are bombarded with different ideas about how things should be.

"The fact that women can go out and earn as much as men has destabilised traditional roles.

"But fundamentally we all still hanker after the traditional ideas, so it is rather like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole."ADNFCR-1043-ID-18284645-ADNFCR
