... Singletons 'can't afford property' Singletons 'can't afford property'

28 February 2008

Single people find it harder to buy homes than their coupled-up counterparts, according to new research.

A financial expert from Fool.co.uk said that singletons will find it nearly impossible to get onto the housing ladder on their own salary alone.

David Kuo, head of personal finance at the website, said this would be particularly problematic for people wanting to buy property in London where house prices are sky-high.

Research out this week showed that singletons are far better off when it comes to expenditure than those in a relationship.

Collectively, singletons in the UK are around £4 billion better off than couples.

However, they are less likely to be able to afford property because they are not buying with their other half, unlike many people in relationships.

Mr Kuo said: "I think the market is such that a single person on a single wage will find it impossible to get onto the housing ladder.

"Two people, when they club their finances together, will find it a lot easier and will find that they have a lot more choice."
