Study takes more rounded view of teen sex

A new study has traced the evolution of teenage attitudes to sex.

Among sexually inexperienced young people, the percentage reporting only positive experiences from abstaining from sex fell from 46 per cent to 24 per cent over the two-year period of the study.
More sexually experienced participants were more likely to report good outcomes from not having sex than those who had their first sexual encounter during the course of the study.
Lead author Sonya Brady said it was illuminating to look beyond the sexual health issue.
"Young teens are aware of the health risks, but this study shows that teens are assessing how they feel about refraining from sexual behaviors based upon how having sex makes them feel - and those feelings become increasingly influential over time," she said.
Negative consequences of refraining from sex cited by respondents, who were surveyed every six months, included 'felt regret', 'felt left out' and 'felt like you let your partner down'.
