... The £1k cost of being a wedding guest The £1k cost of being a wedding guest

13 August 2008

People in the UK are so keen to see their loved-up loved-ones tie the knot with their Mr or Miss Right that many are spending more than £1,000 a pop.

A study by finance website fool.co.uk found that one in 12 wedding guests are forking out more than a grand to attend weddings.

The costs of stag and hen nights, travel to the venue, wedding presents and new outfits are taking their toll on consumers' wallets.

Around 73 per cent of people will be going to two weddings this season, spending an average of £256 per wedding.

But some spendthrifts will pay more, with 18 per cent paying £400 and eight per cent forking out more than £1,000.

One in three wedding guests are paying to attend the nuptials on their credit cards, the survey found.

Laura Starkey, financial expert at Fool.co.uk, said: "While the experience and memories of attending a wedding can be priceless, the costs associated with doing so can be substantial.

"Meeting these expenses can be tough - so it's vital that wedding guests think carefully about what, how and where they're spending and try to budget and plan ahead."
