... Twins unwittingly marry eachother Twins unwittingly marry eachother

11 January 2008

It sounds like a Grecian myth or a movie plotline too unlikely to ever happen in real life.

A peer has revealed that twins from the UK were married without realising that they were brother and sister.

They were separated at birth and adopted as babies by different families.

Lord Alton, a crossbench peer, revealed a High Court judge had told him of the case, saying the pair had experienced an "inevitable attraction".

He referred to the extraordinary case during a House of Lords debate on the Human Fertility and Embryology Bill last month.

"They were never told that they were twins," he told the Lords.

"They met later in life and felt an inevitable attraction, and the judge had to deal with the consequences of the marriage that they entered into and all the issues of their separation."

The identities of the twins and details of the relationship and marriage are to remain secret.
