... UK a nation of worry warts UK a nation of worry warts

27 March 2008

It's official. Britain is a nation of worriers, according to new research released this week.

A study by Abbey found that UK consumers spend around 25 hours a week worrying, with their property and possessions taking top spot in the worrying league.

Some 67 per cent of respondents to the company's survey are worry warts, suffering angst over their house and its contents.

Around 48 per cent of Britons are concerned about how much money they have in the bank – or rather, how little.

With spiraling house prices and the increased cost of living, residents living in London and the south-east are the most worried, compared to those in Scotland who are the most carefree.

The study also showed that women are the worst worriers, with 49 per cent stressing about things, compared to 47 per cent of women.

Lloyd Wilson, head of Abbey Insurance, said: "The current climate has seen more people worry about the event of job loss. While you cannot predict the future, you can at least be prepared for it.

"While it is natural for people to worry a bit about their property and financial security, for the people who worry for more than 25 hours a week, it's more than just a healthy concern. People need to find ways to put their mind at rest."
