Men love to gossip
7 June 2007
Men are as interested in gossiping as men, according a new survey by the University of Leicester.
|
The researchers described gossip as a "key resource" used by both sexes to assess potential partners.
Gossip among girls is said to focus on whether they are pretty, while men are more concerned with their earnings.
Explaining the importance of gossip, study author Dr Charlotte De Backer, said: "Gossip is no idle chatter: it has clear functions.
"Gossip is present in everyone's life, almost everyone gossips - some more than others of course - and we all become the subject of gossip at some point."
Of the results she said: "We expected that girls overall might show a greater interest in gossip and remember more gossip, but our study shows that boys are as interested when it concerns gossip about potential romantic partners. This does imply that girls are more likely to be gossiped about than boys."
The survey also revealed some worrying results for those in relationships. It was found that people in relationships are just as interested in gossiping about potential future partners as those who listed themselves as single.
